Watershed Restoration, Guatemala

Guatemala in coordination with the UN identified two watersheds essential to restore for the well being of the country.

Restoration Era is working with the Guatemala Ministry of Water to restore the Samalá and Ocosito Watersheds from the mountains to the mangrove estuaries on the coast.

This landscape focused projects provides environmental, social, and economic benefits to all those who rely on the watershed.

Within the watershed restoration project there are three zones (highlands, tropical forests, and mangroves) in which Era has active projects. Learn more about each project using the links on this page.

These projects can be sponsored through tree donations or through certified carbon credits.

Highlands Restoration

Restore high mountain forests along essential spring beds and rivers. This project reduces erosion, improves water availability, fights rising temperatures, and has had tremendous local buy in with over 1,000 local people volunteering their support.

Tropical Forest Restoration

Transform heavily degraded land into a thriving forest, create sustainable agriculture solutions for the land, and  bring jobs to survivors of Guatemala's 36 year long civil war.

Mangrove Restoration

These mangrove estuaries are home to many fish, shellfish, and bird species, but the forests degradation has led to the area to have little life compared to what it once served as a habitat for. Through this project you can restore the mangrove estuary, restore traditional fishing livelihoods, and provide immediate solutions that allow people to stay with their families instead of being driven to emigrate.

Landscape Restoration

We started with mangrove restoration in Guatemala and saw that upstream erosion and pollution were degrading the local estuary. Now we are teaming up with Guatemala's Ministry of Water to restore the entire watershed from its mountainous headwaters near Quetzaltenango, through Guatemala's tropical savannah and agricultural zones, and finally to the mangrove estuaries along the Pacific Coast.

This holistic large scale project will create an ecological corridor, prevent erosion, restore the watershed, improve agriculture, create jobs, and transform life for all those who rely on the health of the watershed.

The Samala and Ocosito Watersheds identified by the UN as critical for restoration are outlined in blue.
